Dibbern, a Hamburg-based porcelain company, commissioned Elias Grau to design the user manual and iconography for Lumen, a battery-powered table lamp designed by German lighting designer Tobias Grau. Known for his long-standing collaboration with Dibbern on lighting projects over the past three decades, Tobias Grau was invited to create a lamp that complements Dibbern’s bone china collection. Elias Grau’s role was to communicate Lumen’s innovative functionality through clear and intuitive graphic design. As the lamp’s design eliminates traditional switches to preserve the purity of the bone china form, all controls such as power, dimming, and color adjustment are activated by tilting the lamp. The challenge was to visually explain this novel interaction system in a way that felt both intuitive and aligned with Dibbern’s refined aesthetic. In addition to designing the communication for Lumen, Elias Grau also proposed a new packaging design and a rebranding of Dibbern’s existing corporate identity.
